 Music

Music Department

The Music Department is a hive of activity. All pupils in Years 8, 9 & 10 study music, with emphasis on the three skill areas of Performing, Composing, Listening and Appraising.  Music is offered as a GCSE option in Year 11, an AS in Year 13 and as an A2 in Year 14. There are numerous opportunities for pupils to be engaged in music making throughout their time at Fivemiletown College and we take great pride in celebrating the musical success of our pupils both inside and outside of school.

Key Stage 3

Pupils receive two periods of Music per week. When pupils come to us in Year 8 they will have had a range of very different experiences of music in Primary School. We aim to make music accessible to all pupils, but still facilitate and encourage those who may have had more experience or already play an instrument.

We study a variety of topics that will enable pupils to appreciate various styles of music and help them develop a critical listening ear - something that is very useful for GCSE and A Level Music. Some of the topics that we study include: The Elements of Music, The Orchestra, Traditional and Folk Music, Jazz and Blues, Film Music and Popular Music, among others. Throughout all topics, pupils will develop their listening, performing and composing skills.

Music education enhances learning skills, communication skills, creativity, teamwork, discipline, cultural awareness, respect for others and self-esteem.
